Dallas Mavericks general manager Nico Harrison is standing firm amid intense backlash over the high-profile trade that sent Luka Doncic to the Los Angeles Lakers earlier this year. Despite ongoing chants of “Fire Nico” from angry fans, Harrison insists he has no regrets.
The blockbuster February deal saw Doncic land in LA while the Mavericks acquired veteran big man Anthony Davis. Though the trade shocked the NBA community — especially with Doncic having led Dallas to the NBA Finals just last season — Harrison defended the move as one made with the franchise’s long-term success in mind.
Speaking to local media, Harrison emphasized his responsibility to prioritize the Mavericks’ future. “Some decisions will be unpopular, but my job is to do what’s best for the franchise, both now and long-term,” he said.
He also doubled down on the team’s shift toward a defense-first philosophy, pointing to Davis as the foundation of that strategy. “Defense wins championships, and this trade sets us up for that,” Harrison added.
The comments come as the Mavericks gear up for a do-or-die play-in game against the Sacramento Kings on Wednesday in California. A loss would officially end Dallas’ season.
Meanwhile, Doncic has quickly become a fan favorite in LA, with his No. 77 Lakers jersey becoming the league’s best-seller and his recent 45-point return to Dallas adding fuel to the ongoing debate.
