The Quiapo Church has finalized preparations for the annual “Pahalik” tradition, which will begin on Tuesday, January 7, at the Quirino Grandstand. The event is part of the larger Feast of Jesus Nazareno festivities, culminating with the Traslacion on January 9.

Schedule and Highlights

According to Fr. Robert Arellano, spokesperson for Nazareno 2025, a special mass for volunteers will be held on Monday, January 6, ahead of the “Pahalik.” The image of Jesus Nazareno will be available for veneration starting January 7 until January 9.

“Beginning January 7, Jesus Nazareno will already be at the Quirino Grandstand,” said Fr. Arellano during a radio interview.

The “Pahalik” allows devotees to touch or kiss the revered 400-year-old image, a cherished tradition among Filipino Catholics.

Tight Security Measures

Authorities are expecting millions of devotees for the Traslacion, the grand procession of Jesus Nazareno’s image from Quirino Grandstand to Quiapo Church. To ensure safety:

  • Over 14,000 police officers and 1,000 soldiers will be deployed.
  • Devotees are advised to avoid bringing bags to expedite security checks.

“Security will be strict. Those with bags must undergo scanning, but without a bag, entry will be faster,” Fr. Arellano added.

Safety and Health Reminders

The Philippine National Police (PNP) assured the public there are no current serious threats to the event but emphasized vigilance. PNP spokesperson Brigadier General Jean Fajardo encouraged compliance with safety guidelines to avoid incidents. Last year’s Traslacion saw around 800 injuries among participants.

Emergency health teams from the Department of Health (DOH) and the Red Cross will be present to assist as needed.

Devotion and Tradition

The Traslacion, a symbolic journey of faith, remains the highlight of the celebration, with devotees expressing their devotion through participation. The Quiapo Church has also reminded attendees not to climb the Andas, the carriage carrying the sacred image, to prevent accidents.
