National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) Director Jaime Santiago clarified Tuesday that Julie “Dondon” Patidongan, known as alias Totoy, did not implicate any NBI agents in the case of the 34 missing sabungeros who disappeared between 2021 and 2022.
In a press briefing, Santiago explained that Patidongan made the clarification during a recent media appearance. “He said himself that he never claimed any NBI involvement,” Santiago stated, adding that he had directly challenged Patidongan to name any involved NBI agent or request a lineup if names were unknown.
This clarification, Santiago said, “vindicates the NBI” and maintains the bureau’s integrity. “I don’t want to break the public’s trust in us. The NBI is a trusted institution,” he added.
The NBI also reiterated its readiness to assist in the ongoing investigation. Santiago emphasized their forensic capabilities, including DNA analysis and lie detection, offering full support without the need for DOJ coordination.
Patidongan has claimed that the missing cockfighting enthusiasts were buried in Taal Lake. He previously named businessman Atong Ang as the alleged mastermind and linked actress Gretchen Barretto to the case—allegations both parties have strongly denied, citing extortion threats.
