The National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) has expressed its willingness to grant a request from Vice President Sara Duterte to reschedule her summon, should she formally ask. This comes as Duterte prioritizes attending a House panel inquiry on Friday.

In a statement to GMA News Online, NBI Director Jaime Santiago confirmed the bureau’s openness to rescheduling, saying, “Yes,” when asked if such a request would likely be approved. However, Santiago clarified that the NBI had not yet received a formal request from Duterte.

Allegations and Hearing Priorities

Duterte faces an NBI probe over alleged grave threats and potential violations of the Anti-Terrorism Act. The investigation stems from her controversial statement about ordering someone to kill President Ferdinand Marcos Jr., the First Lady, and Speaker Martin Romualdez if a supposed plot against her were to succeed.

Despite receiving a subpoena, Duterte has requested a rescheduling to attend the House good government and public accountability panel hearing in support of her staff.

DOJ’s Call for Prompt Investigation

Justice Undersecretary Jesse Andres emphasized the urgency of continuing the investigation. Speaking at the Balita Pilipinas Ngayon forum, Andres said the probe must proceed early next week.

“Possibly Monday or Tuesday next week, the investigation must continue because it is important. The situation and the threat are serious,” Andres stated.

He added that Duterte’s statement is crucial for identifying the individuals allegedly tasked with carrying out the threats.

Duterte’s Defense

Duterte has maintained that her remarks were “maliciously taken out of logical context.” She criticized the Marcos administration for claiming that the President’s life is under active threat, arguing that her hypothetical remarks do not constitute a direct threat.

The Department of Justice earlier announced its investigation into Duterte for possible violations of Republic Act 11479, also known as the Anti-Terrorism Law.

As the situation develops, both the House panel and the NBI are expected to play pivotal roles in addressing the allegations against the Vice President.
