The Philippines’ National Security Council (NSC) announced on Friday that investigations are still underway to determine the origin and purpose of an underwater drone discovered near Masbate on December 30.

Ongoing Investigation

NSC spokesperson Jonathan Malaya shared updates on the probe during Bagong Pilipinas Ngayon, explaining the meticulous process of identifying the drone.
“It could have come from anywhere,” Malaya said. “We are currently identifying the drone’s origin, specific details, and tracking vessels that may have passed through the area to determine where it came from.”

The Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) is leading the investigation, but Malaya stated it is too early to conclude whether the device is linked to a specific country.

Details of the Discovery

The 2.72-meter-long drone was found floating in San Pascual waters by fishermen. The Bicol Region police’s explosive ordnance disposal team examined the device, identifying it as an underwater navigation and communication system.

Speculations and Concerns

A security analyst suggested the possibility of the drone being used by a foreign nation for military purposes. However, the Philippine Navy noted that its yellow coloring might indicate a research or scientific purpose.

Despite this, the NSC emphasized the security risks posed by such devices.
“This drone is used for reconnaissance and surveillance, making it critical to identify its origin and purpose,” Malaya said.

International Coordination and Territorial Concerns

The NSC is collaborating with international counterparts to gather more information. Malaya noted that if the investigation confirms illegal activities or links to a specific country, the Philippines would take the appropriate measures.

“What’s alarming is that it was found within the archipelagic waters of our country, specifically in the Masbate area,” Malaya added.

As the investigation continues, the government remains focused on understanding the drone’s purpose and ensuring the protection of Philippine territorial sovereignty.
