Before cementing his status as one of the Philippines’ most beloved comedians, Roderick Paulate was an acclaimed dramatic actor. It was none other than the late King of Comedy, Dolphy, who convinced him to embrace comedy fully.

A Pivotal Moment with Dolphy

On Fast Talk with Boy Abunda, Roderick shared how Dolphy gave him life-changing advice during the filming of John and Marsha sa Probinsiya.

“May ginawa akong scene, na lalaki siya na, ‘Shirley, halika ka nga rito.’ Pero ‘yun pala si Rolly ‘yung gusto niya puntahan,” Roderick recalled.

Dolphy, impressed by his comedic timing, pulled him aside and said, “Tawang-tawa kami sa’yo. ‘Dick, yaw mo mag-comedy? Mag-comedy ka na lang. Ituloy mo na lang.’”

The King of Comedy emphasized that Roderick could bring something new to the genre, telling him, “Kailangan ng bago.”

A Legacy of Laughter

Roderick took Dolphy’s advice to heart. After the 1985 release of John and Marsha sa Probinsiya, he transitioned to comedy and starred in iconic films such as Mga Anak ni Facifica Falayfay, Gorio and Tekla, and Petrang Kabayo. These roles solidified his reputation as one of the country’s finest comedic actors.

Upcoming Project

Now, decades later, Roderick continues to make audiences laugh. He will headline the much-anticipated series Mga Batang Riles, set to premiere on GMA Prime on January 6.

Dolphy’s advice clearly had a lasting impact, shaping Roderick’s journey as a comedic legend.
