The Philippines has turned to French authorities for help after the bronze bust of national hero José Rizal disappeared from its pedestal at Place José Rizal in the 9ᵗʰ arrondissement of Paris.
According to the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA), the bust went missing sometime between the night of October 25 and the morning of October 26, 2025. The Philippine Embassy in Paris immediately reported the incident to local law enforcement and is coordinating with French authorities to locate the monument or arrange for its replacement.
The bust had been installed in June 2022 as a symbol of the enduring friendship between the Philippines and France — and as a tribute to Rizal’s time in Europe. Embassy officials and Filipino-community leaders in France expressed deep concern over the loss, characterising it as an attack on both national pride and cultural diplomacy.
While the motive remains unknown, theft-oriented incidents are suspected (public monuments are often targeted). The embassy said it is exploring all avenues — including recovery, compensation or commissioning a new bust if needed.
