Senate Minority Leader Koko Pimentel raised concerns on Friday over the decision to delay the presentation of impeachment articles against Vice President Sara Duterte, which was moved from June 2 to June 11.
Pimentel said he plans to ask Senate President Francis “Chiz” Escudero about the rationale behind the change, noting it contradicts the Senate’s original impeachment calendar.
According to Escudero, the delay is necessary to prioritize passing key items in the administration’s legislative agenda before the 19th Congress adjourns sine die on June 14. He cited the outcome of a recent Legislative-Executive Development Council (LEDAC) meeting.
However, Pimentel argued that impeachment should take precedence, pointing out that Senate rules clearly state legislative work must give way when impeachment proceedings are pending.
The delay sparked mixed reactions among senators. Senate President Pro Tempore Jinggoy Estrada supported Escudero’s decision, highlighting the urgency of passing laws like the Universal Health Care amendments and the Anti-POGO Act.
Senator Sherwin Gatchalian added that with only six session days left, the Senate must use the time to finalize 12 priority bills through hearings and bicameral meetings.
Senator Imee Marcos, who is currently in the Netherlands with VP Sara, echoed the sentiment, calling the impeachment proceedings “politicking” and backing the focus on legislation that “truly benefits the people.”
