Philippine National Police (PNP) Chief Police General Nicolas Torre III announced that police officers who fail to meet required weight standards within a year may face dismissal from service.
In an interview with Super Radyo dzBB, Torre cited Section 30 of Republic Act No. 6975—the DILG Act of 1990—which mandates that PNP personnel must be within five kilograms of the ideal weight based on height, age, and sex.
“If there’s a standard for weight and height, you should not exceed or fall below it by more than five kilos,” Torre explained.
Officers found to be outside the ideal weight range are given six months to one year to meet the fitness criteria. Failure to comply after this period could result in separation from service, Torre said.
However, for those with medical conditions, alternative actions such as administrative reassignment or a disability discharge may be considered, pending consultation with the National Police Commission (NAPOLCOM).
Torre, who assumed his post earlier this month, emphasized the importance of physical fitness in determining police promotions and maintaining discipline. The PNP believes the initiative reflects its commitment to public accountability and professionalism.
