Speaker Martin Romualdez has labeled the allegations made by Pastor Apollo Quiboloy, the leader of the Kingdom of Jesus Christ, as unfounded and a mere diversion. Quiboloy had claimed that the Philippine government was conspiring with the U.S. to arrest him in connection to charges he faces abroad.
Romualdez urged Pastor Quiboloy to confront his legal issues through appropriate channels and to respect the judicial processes in place. This statement came in response to Quiboloy’s assertion that there was a plan, allegedly by the U.S., to forcibly detain or even eliminate him in the Philippines.
Understanding the gravity of the charges Quiboloy faces internationally, including his inclusion on the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI)’s wanted list, Romualdez emphasized the adherence of Philippine government officials to the constitution and laws. He firmly denied any accusations of collusion with foreign entities for illicit activities, stressing that these claims distract from the serious legal matters at hand.
Quiboloy’s charges in the U.S. include conspiracy to engage in sex trafficking by force, coercion, sex trafficking of children, marriage fraud, fraud and misuse of visas, bulk cash smuggling, promotional money laundering, and international promotional money laundering.
Romualdez affirmed the government’s commitment to the rule of law and the safety and security of all individuals. He also encouraged the public to remain discerning of information received and to trust in the legal and democratic processes.
In addition, Romualdez issued a subpoena against Quiboloy to compel his attendance at a House investigation regarding the franchise of Sonshine Media Network International (SMNI), believed to be owned by Quiboloy.
Meanwhile, Senator Risa Hontiveros warned of arresting Quiboloy if he fails to appear at a separate Senate investigation into allegations of his involvement in human trafficking, sexual abuse, and other abuses against former members of his religious group. Hontiveros advised Quiboloy to participate in the legal proceedings, including the Senate investigation, rather than portraying himself as a victim.
The Senate has scheduled the next hearing for March 5, with Hontiveros stating that failure to appear would result in Quiboloy being cited for contempt and arrested. Quiboloy has previously stated his refusal to attend the Senate hearing but expressed willingness to face any court charges against him.
