On July 4, U.S. President Donald Trump signed into law a sweeping tax and spending bill dubbed the One Big Beautiful Bill, celebrating the occasion with a rally-style event at the White House South Lawn.
The legislation, passed by a narrow 218-214 margin in the Republican-led House, makes Trump’s 2017 tax cuts permanent, enacts deep federal spending reductions, and channels funds into border security and immigration enforcement. However, it is also expected to cut health coverage for millions of Americans.
“This is the biggest tax cut, the biggest spending cut, and the largest border security investment in American history,” Trump declared at the event, which featured military flyovers and a large crowd of supporters.
The bill represents a major legislative win for Trump and GOP leaders, including House Speaker Mike Johnson and Senate Majority Leader John Thune, despite criticism over its projected $3 trillion addition to the national debt. Most Republicans supported the bill, with only two breaking ranks to join all House Democrats in voting against it.
Democrats slammed the legislation, warning of its impact on healthcare and food aid for low-income citizens. House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries made a record-breaking speech against the bill, while Democratic National Committee Chair Ken Martin warned it would cost Republicans politically in the 2026 elections.
